Caring, Cleaning, and Protecting your Outdoor Furniture

Everyone loves having a beautiful garden tucked away in the back of your yard or on your front porch, adding timeless and stunning beauty to your home. After putting so much hard work on your floral patch, making it burst with vibrant blossoms and fruitful harvests, it is somehow imperative that you also maintain the furniture that surrounds it, so it won’t be a sight for sore eyes.

Adding outdoor furniture to your garden, backyard, deck, or patio, helps to make your space cozier and inviting. However, just as your plants and flowers need some tilling and watering, your outdoor fixtures also need a little TLC.

A lot of manufacturers nowadays produce diverse forms of outdoor furniture and accessories to add more style, structure, and less costly products. Outdoor furniture could range from wicker, wood, fabric, aluminum, wrought iron, stainless steel, and resin. Although most of these items are crafted for outdoor use and require low upkeep, they still require maintenance in varying methods, here’s how:

Plastic Furniture

Because of its low-maintenance asset, plastic furniture has become a staple in so many yards, decks, gardens, and patios. It’s cheap, reliable, and easy to clean – simply put, it’s the best invention created, next to bacon! The downside, however, is that plastic furniture tends to get discolored and misshapen over time if it gets directly hit by sunlight. One great way to maintain your plastic furniture is to display it in a shaded area of your yard.

A washcloth dunked into a mix of warm water and soft detergent are all you’ll need to clean your plastic furniture, although, if you encounter dust, dirt, or grime in fine splits, you might also need a toothbrush handy. Scrubs or scourers are not advisable since they could scratch your pieces. Wipe your furniture off with a dry cloth after rinsing to avoid watermarks.

Wicker Outdoor Furniture

Wicker outdoor furniture can easily be cleaned with the use of a hose or a pressure washer. However, if the furniture is too dirty, a sponge and some mild detergent may be needed. Be sure to remove the cushions before washing it clean. Once dried, apply paste wax to the frames to keep it shiny and resistant to water. If the seat cushions have a removable cover, it is best to wash them and store them indoors during the wet season.

Resin Furniture

Resin furniture is usually resistant to rotting or splinting in extreme temperatures, however, a high-quality furniture cover might be recommended if you are planning to leave your fixtures outdoors the whole season. This is because resin could fade over time. Keep your furniture clean and dry before covering it to avoid mold and mildew from surfacing. A sponge, water pressure, and mild detergent may be used to keep your furniture spotlessly clean.

Wooden Furniture

Wooden Furniture should be stored indoors especially during the winter so that it will not get corroded. If your wooden outdoor pieces have been coated with high-quality varnish, they can easily be cleaned using mild detergent, a soft sponge, and water. Be sure to wipe your furniture dry afterward to prevent watermarks from forming.

Metal or Steel Frame

Most metal or stainless-steel furniture are powder-coated to make them rust-free or rust-resistant. If your metal furniture isn’t, a paste wax or naval jelly can be applied to prevent corrosion and rusting.
